Less unemployment is better for all, especially among poorer people, because in Chile white collar employment is usually below 2%. So a decline in the overall rate tends to mean that more poorer people have jobs. Living here, one sees absolutely no sign of economic downturn like there is in the USA and Europe. Chile may not be perfect but its export-based, natural resource economy coupled with largely sane government policies, and welcoming attitude toward new businesses and foreigners, have made for a winning combination which is expected to continue for years to come.
People like to point to all sorts of things to blame their troubles: illegal aliens, greedy capitalists, increased immorality, etc. There is no end to the list of culprits that cause of their economic woes. But the truth of the matter is that, besides Satan and false religion, our greatest enemy has been the state, as Albert J. Nock keenly pointed out eight decades ago. Lew Rockwell reminds us of this fact in a recent post where he points out that the evil and wily "1%" dominates "the 99%." The 1% are not capitalists and entrepreneurs but rather the agents of the state. Rockwell hits the nail right on the head.
Chile is a country which has "more market and less state." That is not to say that Chile is perfectly free. It is not. And it has some internal troubles frequently on account of disgruntled Marxists demanding some other freebie from their savior the state. But it is still far better than most places on earth.
Our hats off to Hong Kong, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, South Korea, Bermuda, New Zealand, Uruguay and Panama, too. Thank God we do not have to live in beleaguered countries with state-infested regimes causing high unemployment and other maladies like Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria, Nepal, Argentina, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Venezuela, China, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, Span, Ireland, Poland, South Africa, Turkey, Canada or the United States! The state has bungled things up so badly in those places that many people find themselves without a job or underemployed. See this report as well as this Wikipedia listing of high unemployment countries.
Do you want to get a job? Start honing-up your Spanish and get to Chile as soon as you can. Stop whining about your present woes when you alone are to blame for choosing to remain under an evil regime. Get out while the getting is good. Help us make Chile the New America.
